wake up!

in seeking escape, we imprison the self.

It’s three p.m. and I’ve just walked home in the ninety-degree heat from being at school since eight a.m. My brain hurts and all I want to do is jump in bed and scroll on my phone. Five minutes go by, then an hour, then two. By the time I catch myself, the sun is down, my day has vanished before my eyes, and my brain is fried. One more scroll then I’ll get up…no! This is not resting or relaxing, decompressing or de-stressing, this is a voluntary sacrifice of your autonomy. Wake up!

You get bored of TikTok, so you switch to Instagram Reels, then you check Snapchat, you read Tweets, fall into a Reddit rabbit hole; an endless cycle of switching between apps to fulfill your dopamine craving. You actively destroy your attention span, yet you question why you can’t focus in school? At work? Always waiting for the next notification, another like, another follow…wake up!

You’re living in an alternate reality, one where people cross the street without looking both ways, drive without looking at the road ahead, and rot in bed for hours, all because of some pixels on a screen. You’ve become a slave to social media, nothing more than a pawn in the game, draining your sense of self while filling billionaire pockets. Wake up!
